Aviation Medical Exam
FAA-Designated Aviation Medical Exams for Idaho Pilots
Maintaining your FAA medical certificate requires an exam performed by a provider who is officially designated by the Federal Aviation Administration. At IHNC, our Aviation Medical Examiner (AME) conducts Class 2 and Class 3 medical evaluations and can issue most certificates the same day as your visit. We also offer Special Issuance Consultations to identify exactly what documents you need before your appointment. Spend less time waiting and more time flying.
Appointment scheduling for this exam is by phone only.
What to Expect
Your exam will follow the FAA medical standards. Our AME will guide you through each required assessment and answer any questions before, during, and after your visit.
The FAA Aviation Medical Exam includes:
- Vision & Hearing: Minimum 20/40 acuity and the ability to hear a “forced whisper” at 5 feet.
- Cardiovascular & Blood Pressure: A review of heart health and blood pressure readings that fall within FAA-accepted parameters.
- Neurological Review: Screening for conditions that could affect cognitive function, coordination, or consciousness.
- General Physical Evaluation: A comprehensive assessment of your overall health, including respiratory function and musculoskeletal condition.
- Medical History Review: A thorough review of past and current conditions, medications, and any prior FAA medical history.
What to Bring to Your Exam
To ensure your certificate can be issued the day of your visit, please bring the following:
- A valid government-issued photo ID
- A complete list of current medications, including dosages and prescribing physician information
- Documentation of any past or current medical conditions relevant to your FAA history
- Specialist clearance letters for any cardiac, neurological, or surgical history
- Any prior FAA medical records or denial letters, if applicable
If you are unsure what to bring based on your specific health history, call us ahead of your appointment.
Special Issuances Consulting
Don’t let a medical condition keep you grounded. Many pilots assume a diagnosis automatically disqualifies them from flying, but it often doesn’t. Through the FAA’s Special Issuance process, conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, cardiac history, and others may still qualify for certification with proper documentation.
A pre-visit Special Issuances consultation is available to help you identify exactly what records, specialist letters, or supporting documentation you need before your exam, reducing the risk of deferral and avoiding unnecessary FAA delays.
Certificate Classes & Renewal Requirements
IHNC offers exams for Class 2 and Class 3 medical certificates. Class 1 (Commercial Pilot) certificates are not available at this location.
- Class 2: Should be renewed every 12 months.
- Class 3: Should be renewed every 60 months, or every 24 months for those over the age of 40.
